WELINA MAI KĀKOU....

My name is Kahealani Kamahele. I was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. I attended Star of the Sea School in the Wai'alae district of O'ahu. Upon graduation I moved to Southern California to attend college. I have my Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Chapman University and I am also a Certified Essential Life Coach practicing in the South Bay.  I am a 4th degree black belt in Shotokan Karate and experienced as a karate instructor.

I have been teaching hula for 30+ years. I currently teach Dance of Hawaii at Loyola Marymount University. Additionally, in February 2021, I was voted in as a member of Kūlia I Ka Pūnāwai Kumu Hula Association of Southern California.  In the past, I have taught hula at UCLA for the UCLA Hawaii Club (Hui 'o Imiloa). I participated in various festivals over the past 12 years such as the Lotus Festival, The LA Festival, The Pacific Island Festival, Ho'olaule'a Northridge, San Diego and Alondra Park.

HULA LINEAGE

I began my hula journey at the age of nine. As a child, I learned hula in Kapahulu under the direction of Aunty Pauline Kekahuna and Leilani Mendez. While I had a passion for hula, other interests drew me away.

I moved to California in 1985, for college and studied hula with my aunty Rolanda Mohala Reese, Kumu Hula of Hālau Hula Nāmeakanu O Laka O Hawai’i. In 1988, I taught hula for twelve years at Hālau Kaulana Ka Hale Kula O Na Pua O Ka ʻĀina.

More than 20 years ago, my grandmother gave me her blessing to teach hula and gave me the name of my Hālau. With her blessing, I formed my hula school, Hālau Hula O Kāhealani, and began teaching in 2007 in Rolling Hills, California. In 2014, I relocated to Torrance where I currently teach a variety of classes for both children and adults.

For the past year, I have continued my hula studies as a member of Pāʻū O Hi'iaka, under the direction of Kumu Hula Hōkūlani Holt. My training includes attending weekly hula classes and private lessons on Maui island.

HULA FAMILY

My grandmother is Ann McCabe from Kaneohe. She was a Kumu Hula had her own hālau here in California before moving back home to O'ahu. My grandmother encouraged me from a young age to begin dancing and learning hula.

Ann McCabe is a descendant from a long line of hula practitioners. My family lineage consists of hula dancers and kumu hula. I am ohana to the McCabe, Padaken, Wong, and the Rowan families. This would include Ann's (McCabe) two sisters, Pauline (McCabe) Padaken and Mary (McCabe) Wong; her niece, Aloha (Wong) Dalire.  In addition, Aloha's three daughters are all former Miss Aloha hula and Kumu of their individual halau. (Kapua Dalire-Moe, Kau'i and Keola) as well as Ann McCabe's nephew, Kawaikapuokalani (Rowan) Hewett  who is also a hula master.

My Kamahele ohana consists of entertainers, musicians and dancers. Sonny Kamahele Sr, Iwalani Kamahele, King Kamahele, Francis Kamahele, and Hōkū Zuttermeister are entertainers and musicians. Miss Aloha Hula 1981, Ka'ula Kamahele is my beautiful  cousin and hula dancer.

Hula has always been in my family and in my blood. This means it is my kuleana to perpetuate my culture by sharing it with those who wish to learn.
